Not an
overly spectacular day but a fun
one to be out chasing anyway.
Having got
out in the early afternoon we
managed to see the early
development of the big line of
storms which ended up going over
Brisbane. At around 3:30pm we saw
a small gustfront developing
ahead of a cell around Silverwood
(south of Mutdapilly) on the
Cunningham Hwy.
We saw some
spectacular lightning forks but
captured them with limited
success. One particular bolt
landed less than a kilometre away
to my left (didn't catch it on
film) but I thought I could see
where it contacted the ground.
The bottom small section of the
bolt was a bright red colour, as
if it had hit a tree and caused
it to combust... no way of
knowing, but the red colour was
very distinct.
Some strong
outflow winds blew leaves and
small branches off trees.
The cell
was tracking NE and crossed the
Cunningham Hwy around 4pm. This
is facing NE towards the
direction the storms were
travelling.

A line was
developing which dumped plenty of
rain (50mm in Springwood) but
unfortunately not much lightning.
