Today was a spectacular day on radar with many cells (including two supercells) in SE Qld. I worked until midday, and was free until around 2pm when I had a brief appointment, but this kept me in Brisbane until after 2pm. Storms had fired early today and they were huge. So unfortunately, I couldn't get out west to watch them start.

At 12:30pm the first cell was already black on radar (producing the heaviest rain on the scale and often a sign of hail) just north of Gatton and by 1:20pm had anvilled out over Brisbane. This is the view north from Mt Coot-tha at 1:20pm:

Southwards and another massive cell was moving NE across Kyogle in NSW, but was well and truly visible from Mt Coot-tha:

At 1:20pm, our SE Qld storm to the NW was dumping 8cm hail on Esk.

New storms were now firing up behind it. After 2pm I was obligation-free but with so much activity around, I was confused as to where to go.

I went out to Marburg which I knew had good views west. The cells were tracking NE across (and just to the W) of Marburg. I really expected to see some base features, but all it offered was lots of heavy rain and some decent lightning which I couldn't photograph.

At 3pm, with Esk in the path of more activity, I decided to head north. I wasn't keen to get under the rain (or any hail) so I backed off a bit and tried to catch some lightning. This is just outside Fernvale:

With so much rain around, there actually wasn't that much to see.

More cells were developing to the south and heading NE towards Boonah / Beaudesert, so I headed down the Ipswich-Boonah Rd.

For a while it didn't seem like there was much storm activity, but as it got dark I started getting some decent but infrequent lightning.

Trying to keep the persistent rain off the camera was a constant challenge.

It was a long day having gone straight out after work (which started at 4:30am) and not getting home till about 9pm. Today would've seemed like a storm-lover's dream with the giant hail in Esk, golf-ball sized hail on the Gold Coast, a possible tornado in Woodford, and the incredible activity that showed up on radar. But for me there was too much rain. This made is difficult to photograph and also to decide where exactly to go. Then when it finally got dark, there was very little lightning. Overall, it was quite a strange day.
